Summer Activities

Congergence 2008, Tampa Bay, Florida, June 22–28.
Guild member Gudrun Polak is giving two seminars at the concurrent Complex Weavers Seminars — on "Cross Pollination in Fiber Arts" and "Possibilities in Card Weaving". We hope to have reports from those who attend Convergence later in the summer.

Santa Cruz County Fair – Entry Forms due Saturday, August 2.
Entries are in Handspun Yarns, Crafted with Handspun, Felting, Loom Weaving, and Off-Loom Weaving. This is a wonderful local venue for displaying your work.
Special awards: Carrie Jacobson-May Memorial Award for pursuit of excellence in weaving, the Dorothy Miller Memorial Award for pursuit of excellence in spinning, and Carol Fontana Memorial Award for outstanding junior handwoven/handspun.

Fair Dates: September 9–14, 2008. For more information, contact Cathy Walls or go to the website www.santacruzcountyfair.com for entry forms and information. If you would like to help with this exhibit – receiving, juroring process, and/or setup – please contact Cathy directly. Also during the Fair, members of the Guild demonstrate in an area next to the Handspun/Handwoven exhibit. Contact Cathy to signup for demonstrating.

4th Annual Fiber Art Exhibit at the Santa Cruz Art League
August 16 to September 7, 2008
Reception for Artists: Saturday, August 23, 3–5, Fashion Show 2–3pm.
This is an all-California exhibit that includes all the contemporary fiber arts; juror this year is Lisah Horner, who will grant three cash awards. We will post images of Guild members' works after the exhibit opens.

Admission to the Fair is free to guild members on this morning

This is the first meeting of the new year of sharing and programs. Bring something you have made recently, enjoy the program, view the exhibit, and stay for lunch with other Guild members. Bring a project to work on and "hang around" after the meeting for as long as you like.



Study Group Meetings:

Shuttle Throwers, Wednesday the week following Guild meeting; meet at Fresh Choice in Capitola at 11:45 am. Contact Shuttle Throwers for information. This group shares ongoing projects, mostly those woven on a harness loom. New members are welcome.

Rug Weavers Study Group meets periodically at members' homes. Contact Martha Stanley or Janette Gross for information.

Braiders Study Group meets once a month, usually the fourth Wednesday. All weavers of narrow ware, at any level of experience, are welcome. We will meet next the end of the summer. Contact Nora Rogers for Study Group information. New members are welcome.

Dyers Study Group meets perodically at members' homes. Contact Dyers for information.

Spinners, At present we do not have a spinning Study Group. We recommend Anne's Web which meets in Salinas monthly. Members meet the second Saturday of each month from 10am til 2pm at the Buena Vista Grange Hall, 518 River Road. Each meeting includes a pot luck lunch, a show-and-tell opportunity, any announcements anyone cares to make, and the rest of the time is spent doing whatever each member cares to do. There are no officers, and no rules, other than courtesy. Dues are $12 a year. Members receive a monthly newsletter and a roster. Visitors and newcomers are welcome. Directions: From Hwy 1 and Hwy 101, take Hwy 68 to Reservation/River Rd., Salinas. Turn east on River Rd., proceed 5 miles to old gray church on right, 518 River Rd.
