Santa Cruz Handweavers Guild

Workshop Schedule 2012-2013

Sasha Duerr

Sasha Duerr , a professor at the California College of the Arts, will speak at the October Guild meeting about her work with non-toxic, environmentally friendly dyes and dye practices. Duerr is an artist and designer who works with organic dyes, alternative fibers, and the creative reuse of materials. Her work is a cross-pollination of textiles and environmental systems thinking, inspired by ecological principles found in permaculture, as well as regenerative design for food, clothing, and shelter. Duerr's textiles are handwoven with fibers that investigate nature and nurture and are dyed with a revival of nontoxic, organic plant-based recipes.

Duerr is a founder of the Permacouture Institute, whose mission is to support sustainability and preservation of traditional textile methods. The Guild is planning a workshop with Sasha Duerr later in the year. If you are interested in this workshop contact the guild by e-mail and your email will be forwarded to the workshop coordinator.

November 11-13: Ravenstail Medicine Bag Workshop with Cheryl Samuel

Explore the twining techniques used by native weavers of the Northwest Coast to create their magnificent Chief’s cloaks. Ravenstail is one of the older weaving styles used on the coast and is a direct adaptation of basketry techniques. Ravenstail was practiced on the coast until the beginning of the 1800’s, when it was replaced by the innovative Chilkat style. The revival of Ravenstail began in 1990; weavers up and down the coast are now practicing this ancient art form and new robes, aprons, and leggings are being used again in ceremony. Feel the spirit of genius inherent in the early weavers by making a small medicine bag using the traditional techniques, patterns and colors.

If you are interested in this workshop contact the guild by e-mail and your email will be forwarded to the workshop coordinator.
